The Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford and Alexander Malcomson along with a number of other various investors, (including John and Horace Dodge who later founded the Dodge Automobile and Truck Company).
Although the Ford Motor Company had a bit of a rocky start with lawsuits and threats from the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers who were claiming patent rights to most gasoline-powered automobiles, Ford was instantly profitable and they grew from strength to strength from there. After several years of legal issues and wrangling, the Association finally dropped its case and proceedings against Ford in 1911.
In 1913, the Ford Motor Company had developed all of the basic techniques of the assembly line and mass production, and later that year Ford introduced the World’s first moving assembly line. By 1920 Ford’s production was exceeding one million vehicles a year.
Since then Ford has grown to be one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world and it is still the world’s largest family-controlled company having been in continuous family control for over 100 years.
