Hyundai was originally founded as an Engineering and Construction company in 1947 and didn't become established as a motor company until 1967. The companies first model was the Cortina, released in co-operation with the Ford Motor Company in 1968.

In 1986, Hyundai moved into the American market and they quickly became popular, largely due to their affordability.

In 1998, Hyundai began to overhaul its image in an attempt to establish itself as a world-class brand. Hyundai Motor Group (which also consists of Kia), invested heavily in the design, quality, manufacturing and long-term research of its vehicles. It added a 10-year or 100,000 mile warranty to cars sold in the United States and launched an aggressive marketing campaign.
