Jaguar was originally founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922 by William Lyons and William Walmsley who were both motorcycle enthusiasts. It was 1935 before the SS Jaguar name first appeared on a 2.5-litre saloon.
Jaguar made its name by producing a series of eye-catching sports cars, such as the XK 120 of 1949 which was later developed into the XK 140, XK 150 and then the iconic E-Type of 1961. All were hugely successful and embodied Lyons original mantra of "value for money".
In 1966, Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation, the Austin-Morris combine to Form British Motor Holdings and then in 1968, after Leyland had taken over Rover and Standard Triumph, the company then became the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC).
Today, Jaguar cars are designed at the Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres based in Coventry and Warwickshire and are manufactured in Jaguar's assembly plant near Birmingham.
