A brief history of Jeep
Jeep is an American brand of automobiles that solely consists of sport utility vehicles (SUV's), off-road vehicles, and in the past also pickup trucks. Jeep is a marque of the Chrysler Group which it acquired in 1987.
The first Willys MB Jeeps (a US Army vehicle) were produced and manufactured from 1941 to 1945. These small four-wheeled drive utility vehicles are considered the iconic World War II Jeep, and inspired many similar vehicles, such as Land Rover (who are the second oldest 4x4 brand). In 1945 the first civilian models became available, oficially making Jeep the oldest off-road vehicle and SUV brand.
As of the origin of the Jeep name, it is somewhat unknown due to the many theorys where it came from. One widely-held theory however is that the military designation GP (for Government Purposes or General Purpose) was slurred into the word Jeep in the same way that the contemporary HMMWV (for High-Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle) has become known as the humvee.
